I had Austin here after school the other day and I was trying to help him with his spelling words. He was stuck on the word "neighbor. He kept getting the e and the i mixed up. So I told him the phonics rule that I learned in school that i before e except after c. And he spelled the word out, still getting it wrong, when I corrected him, he looks at me and says, "I was putting the i before the e."
Took another look, and gosh darn it, the kid was right! I'd been outsmarted by a 7 yr old.
So I went on to do a little more research and I guess its i before e except after c......... (and before gh). sleigh. weigh. neigh. I dont remember learning that part yet I alwasy kicked butt at spelling bees in our class, school, and district.
Well, then I say out of the blue that they must be changing the rules on us since I was in 2nd grade like 15 yrs ago. The look on the kids face was priceless. "So... you're 17 years older than me?" Yeah, buddy, I am. "Wow. Whoa." He laughs. "That's crazy."
Yeh, it sure is. Be a kid while ya can, kiddo. Don't grow up too fast cuz you will miss it.
Love ya, buddy
